LG has cast aside the modular design found on the G5 and went for a design that’s easier to use with a single hand — making the phone as bezel-less as possible. The LG G5 was launched in April 2016 and didn’t garner as much popularity as is the hype surrounding the G6. Here we’re going to compare the specifications and features of the device.
An Upgraded Processor
The LG G6 is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 821 SoC, which is an upgrade on G5’s Snapdragon 820 chipset. The Snapdragon 821 chipset clocks at 2.35 GHz as compared Snapdragon 820 chipset used on the predecessor, which clocks at a maximum of 2.15 GHz. The 821 processor has a 10% better overall performance than 820 as well as 5% better graphics rendering, giving the new device an edge over the old one.
Bigger Display and Better Design
The LG G6 sports a 5.7-inch LCD (1440 x 2880) with 564 ppi pixel density, which is an upgrade on the 5.3-inch LCD (1440 x 2560) with 554 ppi. LG also did away with the modular design with removable battery found on the G5 with a non-removable battery and bezel-less design, with the display covering almost 80% of the front panel. The new device has a metal frame alongwith glass front and back panels — both with Corning Gorilla glass.
Renewed Dual Camera Tech
The G5 sported a dual camera setting with 16MP normal angle lens camera and 8MP wide lens camera, which in application is likely to be trumped by the dual camera setting on the G6 — which sports two 13MP camera lens, one standard and one wide lens — as both of them use the same 13MP sensor. The 5MP front camera unit on the G6 also received a wide-angle lens, making it a better device for clicking selfies than its predecessor which had an 8MP normal lens camera.
Extended Storage and Memory
While the G5 came with 4GB RAM and 32GB of storage, the G6 borrows the same 4GB RAM unit but comes with an option of 32GB and 64GB of internal storage. The storage on both the devices is expandable up to 2TB using a microSD card.
Water Resistance and Bigger Battery
The G6 will last longer than its predecessor given its 3300mAh battery, which is bigger than the G5’s 2800mAh backup unit. Another notable difference is that the G5 sported a removable battery unit due to its modular design, which the company has cast aside and the new device’s battery isn’t removable. In addition to all of the aforementioned features, the G6 also gets a water and dust resistant design — certified IP68 — something that was missing on the G5. The G6 is going to run on Android Nougat out-of-the-box, while its predecessor came with Android Marshmallow, later made upgradable to Nougat.
