When we hear the term internet we automatically think of the World Wide Web and sometimes use the two terms interchangeably. But are they the same thing and is it correct to use the two terms interchangeably? In this article, we will explore the answers to these questions.
The Internet
Basically, the Internet is a system of networks connected together across the globe which you can gain access to via an Internet Service Provider. This colossal system of networks relies on the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol suite in order to support data transfer as well as other related protocols and gives us access to a variety of other useful services such as the World Wide Web.
World Wide Web
One of the services that the internet allows us to access is the World Wide Web (WWW). The World Wide Web is a collection of web pages found on the collection of networks that is the internet. The World Wide Web relies on three main technologies which are HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language), HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol) and URL (Uniform Resource Locator). HTML is the language of web pages. HTTP is the system of instructions that controls the transfer of information on the World Wide Web. A URL specifies the location of a web page on the World Wide Web. The web was originally formulated in order to make the sharing of data from experiments easier between scientists. Today however, it is accessible to everyone who has an internet connection. It allows for the sharing of vast amounts of information on a variety of different topics. The web has had a profound impact on the way we live life. As an example, the invention of search engines and social media have both been enabled by the web and have literally changed the way we access information and interact.
Conclusion
The internet is not the World Wide Web. The web is a collection of web pages found on the internet. The internet itself is a collection of networks that has enabled other services such as Internet Relay Chat (IRC) which we have not touched on in this article. The internet paved the way for the web which is quite valuable since it allows access to vast amounts of information which may not have been accessible to many persons otherwise. Both the internet and the World Wide Web are quite significant inventions which have changed the way much of the globe’s population lives their lives.
